VISIT TO PERTH - 30TH August 2006

Wednesday, 20th September 2006

The Society stayed at the lovely Royal George Hotel in Perth for four nights. We were very fortunate and had good weather throughout the holiday. The first day out took us to the Caithness Glass factory, to sample liqueurs at the Scottish Liqueur Centre, time in Dunkeld to visit the Cathedral and walk by the river, and on to sample whisky and enjoy the Famous Grouse Experience at the oldest distillery in Scotland, before going to the beautiful gardens at Drummond Castle. After our meal at the hotel we enjoyed an evening of Scottish Country Dancing and a Ceilidh.

On our second day we had a tour of Scone Palace savouring the delights of such a beautiful place and learning a little of its history and the family who lived there. Josie was allowed to play on the organ in the Main Gallery. Later we watched the Falconry Display. This time Jackie volunteered to go down and help. The afternoon was free to discover Perth.

Saturday we travelled through wonderful scenery to Braemar and the famous Braemar Gathering. We had a marvellous view over the field and directly across from the Royal Pavilion. We enjoyed all the Massed Pipe Bands, The Tug o' War teams, Highland Dancing, the Tossing of the Mace by the Drum Majors over the banner held on high poles and the many field and track events. At 3 o'clock led by the Massed Pipe Bands and the Lonach Highlanders and Lonach Pipe Band, the Royal Party arrived to applause of all the spectators. It was a very happy day.

Sunday we journeyed home stopping for a while in Moffat. Everyone had enjoyed the few days in Scotland.
